Implant Restorations

Implant Restorations

Dental implants are the closest thing available to biological teeth when it comes to dental prosthetics. An implant is a titanium base used to support restorations and prosthetics like dental crowns. Implants, once stabilized, offer a full restoration of oral function that lasts for decades. When it comes to single tooth replacement, dental crowns are attached to implants to complete the tooth replacement process. After an implant is embedded, patients will visit with Dr. Ake to begin the process of their restoration’s fabrication.

The Basics on Dental Implant Restorations

A dental implant is used to replace the missing root system of a tooth by embedding it into the jawbone through the empty tooth socket. Since it is made from titanium, it is biocompatible with the body. Over time, bone will fuse around the implant’s structure to secure it in place permanently. Once implants are stable, they can be fitted with a custom restoration (dental crown or bridge).

Restorations attach to dental implants through abutments and are used to replace the visible surfaces of teeth. Shaped like a tooth, an implant restoration will provide a stable biting surface for chewing food so that patients enjoy ideal oral function and no dietary restrictions. If a person chooses white materials such as porcelain or porcelain fused to metal for their implant’s restorations, he or she will enjoy a very natural looking replacement tooth. In fact, porcelain is practically indistinguishable from healthy teeth.

Another option for implant restorations is bridges. A bridge consists of multiple dental crowns and can replace several teeth in a row. When a bridge is anchored to dental implants, patients enjoy a secure and stable tooth replacement solution.

Materials Used to Make Restorations

While porcelain is popular for dental implant restorations, there are other materials available. Some patients choose gold or silver because of their durability. Recently, zirconium has become a popular restoration material.
